BIOGRAPHY

John S. Dykes is a Boston-based artist and illustrator whose work spans more than four decades of professional practice. Known for his award-winning illustration career, he has completed thousands of assignments for clients across publishing, editorial, institutional, and corporate markets. His work has been recognized by The Society of Illustrators, Communication Arts, American Illustration, 3x3 Illustration Annual, Print Magazine, and The Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles, among others, and was included in Luerzer’s Archive 200 Best Illustrators Worldwide.

In recent years, Dykes has expanded his focus to a studio-based fine art practice centered on abstract painting, collage, and mixed media. His paintings explore the accumulation of marks, fragments, memory, and visual signals, balancing structured geometric elements with intuitive gestures and layered surfaces. Drawing on a lifetime of observation, drawing, and image-making, his work investigates how meaning emerges through connection, interruption, and change.

Dykes has exhibited widely throughout his career and his work is held in museum, corporate, and private collections, including The Norman Rockwell Museum and The New Britain Museum of American Art. He has taught illustration at the Rhode Island School of Design and the New Hampshire Institute of Art, and has lectured at numerous colleges, universities, and professional organizations.

He lives and works in Boston's historic Fort Point Arts District.
