Busy busy. Love the French water!
Thanks for the detail on the July 28, 2009
Thanks for the detail on the Barron's cover as I was like "no car chase?" They're so "Fast & Furious" out there. Not like us calm NY drivers. Seriously though, great images. The Lincoln Highway map looks pretty intense. Did it take a long time?

Christoph - Thanks! That was a fun assignment. Pam Budz is one of my all time AD favs - an assignment that fit so closely to some of my 'personal' endeavors... RobD - That water is Evian! (had to...) Thanks for the- Not bad on the time front - somehow these 'overviews' or map-like illos come pretty naturally to me. Once I sit down and get to work, it moves along...

Wow, all of these are superb. What rich color and texture. The Barron's cover stands out for me, too. I love the MoneyWeek concept, as well.
Adam McCauley July 28, 2009
Beautiful stuff John. The California piece is amazing, being an invested resident here, I completely understand this image!
Hal Mayforth July 28, 2009
Primo work, John. You've summed up the entire California experience rather succinctly. Just one question. Where's the crazy Santa Cruz Lady?
Harry July 28, 2009
They have roaches in California? These are great. I would like to see that entire five page map.
Wishawna July 28, 2009
The details on California illo... I had no idea that California was a post-apocalyptic wasteland, complete with giant cockroaches. It didn't seem THAT bad when I went there.
John Dykes July 28, 2009
Wishawna - this all just happened in the last few days - bottom dropped out. Thx Kyle, Adam, Hal, Harry - Santa Cruz lady is staying with us for the week, Hal... Actually - California is not as apocalyptic as the enclosed illustration portrays, of course. Financially, though, this metaphor attempts to hammer home the concept that Calif cannot continue on its current course. Er else.
Wishawna July 28, 2009
Yeah, here in MN we have budget problems also. Except we are actually this bad. I am currently typing this out of the crater that used to be my house. I have to keep this post short- the gangs of mutants are currently on the hunt...

Enjoyed the BARRON'S cover. Being a subscriber it's always great to see an illustration instead of the photos.

Great pieces, John. The Cali piece is outstanding and really accurate to the deserts and border towns, reminds me of vacationing as a kid.
Zina Saunders July 29, 2009
All of them are fun as all get-out, John.
Richard Borge July 29, 2009
great pieces John. Illustrating maps can be tricky to do in an artful way but no problem for you.
