ILLUSTRATING CONNECTICUT
posted: January 31, 2008
This just in: BRIDGEPORT -- Illustrating Connecticut: People, Places, and Things, an exhibit that explores the history and culture of Connecticut through the art of illustration, will be on display in the Burt Chernow Galleries at the Housatonic Museum of Art, Feb. 7 - April 4. The list of illustrators exhibiting includes notables such as Bernie Fuchs of Westport, Guy Billout of Fairfield, Kinuko Craft of Norfolk, Randall Enos of Fairfield, Bob Kessel of Norwich, Leslie Cober-Gentry of Fairfield, who, notably, lives around the corner where John S. Dykes used to reside, but now resides in Massachusetts, and wishes he consumed much more diner food than he does now, because there are no great diners in Sudbury, but at least his cholesterol levels have plummeted (LDL), and Hal Mayforth of New Hampshire...(Some excellent diners in Montpelier, BTW)... Here are 6 of my paintings that will be included in the show. This series, for the most part, was created back at the turn of the century, when I was living in Connecticut eating donuts and stuff. 9 out of 10 Drawgers will attend the opening on Thursday, February 7, 2008, according to the latest Rasmussen poll. The museum is located on the campus of Housatonic Community College, 900 Lafayette Blvd, Bridgeport, CT, less than 150 yards off I-95 (Exit 27) and Rte 8 (Exit 1) in downtown Bridgeport, one block from the Arena at Harbor Yard. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. For more information, call 203-332-5052 or log on to "http://www.housatonicmuseum.org/"
I love painting these sorts of things - interviewing average folks, keeping the process fun and engaging, painting interesting subject matter. Eating.
Heres a detail of Clint and his pancakes.

Some of your best work Mr. Dykes! Sounds like another great show.

John, those are the best! I've always been fascinated by your dough nut glaze technique [see "Premier Coup" post].
Robert Saunders January 31, 2008
These are fantastic, if not hot off the easel. Loved this series when I first saw it—was it at the Society? Or in an annual... Mmm, doughhhh-nuuuuuts...
John Dykes January 31, 2008
Thanks Rob... Joseph, I think you mentioned that donut the day we met at one of the Illo conferences! I don't do much 'direct reference' painting, but it is superior to photos... I had to paint fast, the glaze was melting under the spotlight. I also like eating my reference. Robert, Thanks! these have made the rounds! Little here, little there....

I've been a long-time fan of your map and roadside attraction paintings. You are hereby dubbed "King of Funky Roadside Attraction Paintings". Really, the paintings are a riot of naivety, funk, nostalgia, trivia, and screwiness. They conjure up the fondest of childhood (and pre-healthy adulthood) memories. Please pass the catsup before my french fries float away completely.

Scrumptious! I cannot make it to the show, though :-( but good luck John! Is it time for Indian food in Somerville? I think it is.
Robert Saunders January 31, 2008
Leo, me and Mr. Dykes here wuz talking about a related subject, i.e., lunch, so maybe those two ideas could merge. Next week's bad however. Aftah?.

I wish I could go to the opening. Funny paintings. And a quirky stroll through Connecticut's fascinating food industry.
Adam McCauley January 31, 2008
These are just lovely John. Congrats, and have a great and successful opening.
John Dykes January 31, 2008
Cathleen, You make me want to paint another diner! Thank you! Some of these places do disappear after time... so it's nice to capture them while they are still here. (O'Rourkes was badly damaged in a fire a while ago)... Leo - any time! Jim and Adam, thanks and we'll STILL be looking for you at the opening, just in case....

John, that's some pretty lofty company, I hope you'll be bringing some fresh donuts. I've always loved this series. Where is Swanky Frank's I need to go there soon.
John Dykes January 31, 2008
Dale, Brilliant dialectic, my friend. And... indubitably. Wanna lose your appetite quick?? Go here: http://www.roadfood.com/Reviews/Writeup.aspx?ReviewID=270&RefID=270 Woah! Its right off I95 in Norwalk Ct. Actually, I think I heard they might be closing down... not sure...

My home state. Your stuff is perfect and fun to look at. Good luck with the show.

Hi John, nice images ! Good luck with the opening.

O'Rourke's Diner? I used to attend St. John's School across the street and have 1950s memories of the blue-collar Irishmen having a cup of coffee and a donut before marching off to work. Today, I guess, it caters to Wesleyan stoonts. Brian O'Rourke, scion of the Diner Dynasty, was in my class.

These are so much fun! Have a great show. What was Clint Eastwood doing at O'Rourke's Diner?
Richard Allen February 1, 2008
Beautiful. Good luck with the show, John

OOOO! Very interesting work. Is that first piece Millerton? My family has a house in West Cornwall. Great work! I'll keep this show in mind. Kudos!

They were a little off on their towns John....I live in Easton and Hal is in Vermont.....hence Montpelier. Beautiful diner work....some of your best I think. I once went to O'Rourkes to illustrate a piece about that diner in Gourmet Magazine.
John Dykes February 1, 2008
Thanks everybody.... J.D. - small world! Zina - Clint came to consume blueberry pancakes and tomato juice. Elaine kept his silverware! Part of what I do when interviewing is to ask if there were certain events, or patrons that stood out... At first, employees in this situation are hesitant - they probably think 'this guy cannot be serious'... but they usually open up. Except the guy at Black Rock Service Station. Woah! Peter, O'Rourkes is in Middletown, CT. Randy, I don't know how that passed my editing department. Heads will roll!

Nice paintings. I recognize more than a few of these places from my days growing up on the mean streets of Stratford. I recall frequenting the dairy queen next to Rawley's Drive-In after watching my dad play softball. I'll definitely have to check this out the next time I head up to visit my parents.

I dragged the Drawger site over to my big monitor... wow, it's worth doing it , I can read some of the copy and see all the delicious details. Fine chicken soup for the soul!
rag February 1, 2008
Beautifuuuul work! Unfortunately i wont be able to make the opening and snack at Rines Deli on Rt 84. Have fun.
John Dykes February 1, 2008
RAG, Yeah - Rine's Deli (Rein's?) - the best part of the Boston to New York run! Thanks John & Christoph!
Frances Jetter February 4, 2008
This is great stuff, John. Hope you enjoy the opening.
