Winter Baseball
posted: November 27, 2007
Do not despair! There are plenty of ways to satisfy all of your baseball cravings during the winter months! This piece was created to illustrate 'A Fan's Guide To The Offseason' for Major League Baseball. I was fortunate to have a few pieces accepted into the Society of Illustrator's 50th annual exhibition, and this was one of them. Medium: Acrylic on cheap cardboard from the back of a pad of tracing paper. A few details follow...
One of the smaller pieces......
And another......

Congratulations on SI stuff. Love the drawing going on here. This is a great way to recycle cardboard. Gives me an idea for an old mattress...

RAG - You'll need Epson's new Mattress Scanner 3000.

Nice, nice, nice. I love the mix of painted images and hand-lettering.

Congrats on the SI thing! Particularly like the California image.

These are great John. I'm looking forward to breathing on them up close in NYC.

Thanks folks... Dale, I'll be sure to double plexi this one... but please, no flashbulbs.

Sweet piece, John. We're mulling over trying to come out there in March, maybe we'll see you there.

Yeah, great art John, you unbelievable bastard. [whoops, pardon the mild hostility - left over from my first marriage, it has nothing to do with you, let it go]

J'accuse! You are a bigot! Some of us care not one whit about baseball -- or any stupid sport dominated by a gang of steroid addled thugs, perpetuated by greedy corporations, cheered by brain-dead oafs. You have done no drawings for us. What are we? CHOPPED LIVER!??
Hal Mayforth November 28, 2007
Beautiful piece, John. I question your choice of substrate, however.
Zina Saunders November 28, 2007
Great stuff, John! I really love the kid in the snow. And all the others.
Alex Murawski November 28, 2007
John, Congratulations on SI... for some very nice images. I really enjoy the closeups. As for Hal's concern.... I feel certain this work was done on something like.... Hahnemuhle 100% recycled archival tracing paper backing board. Work like this deserves no less!!

Congrats John! I dig that last one.
Alan Witschonke November 28, 2007
Great stuff, John. Of course, we Bostonians can afford to be smug and we"ll fare better than most this winter because of that little World Series trophy. One question: how come you don't have Winter Haven on the map? (or wherever the Sox are training this winter).
John Dykes November 28, 2007
Thanks Adam! Make the trip! Then swing by Boston area fer some good home cookin'. Barry - I LOVE you goddammit. You know that. You KNOW that. Now climb down off of there before you hurt someone. C'mon. And breathe....2...3... Jeff, J.D., Hal, cheers to 'substrate' - a fine word. Zina - I'll mail you the original if you keep this up.... Alex - How...did.... you.... ...know(?) keen eyeballing there! Leo and Alan - thanks... don't know why Winter Haven was not on the list... and I was just too afraid to ask. I couldda lost the job for that kind of talk.... Next to come: Series of chopped liver studies.
