Remember Whitewater?
posted: January 19, 2007
Talk about conspiracy theory! Here's a bad scan of a 'Whitewater' landscape I never did anything with... I even had fun with a golden rule type composition. See the Trooper with the bloodhound? James McDougal sitting on his camper throwin' dice... Ol' Web Hubbell behind a tree... Madison Guaranty sinking...Susan McDougal in her bathing suit (Why? I don't know...) I think it was this that led to a Time portrait assignment of Susan McDougal (follows) (another bad scan....).
Craig Livingstone, Bar bouncer turned head of White House security... You can't make this stuff up! (for Time)...

These are great, John! My favorite is the poor Susan McDougal one: her expression, the way you handled the color is beautiful, and the type and drawing and composition...everything!

Yikes, Dykes! You strike again! And again and again and again! Lou Christie ain't got nothin' on you, baby!

John, these are excellent. I'd love to see details of the Whitewater piece. Great meeting you last night!

John, The "Whitewater" is just stunning. If Drawger could only be 200 - 400 pixels wider horizontal posts like this would greatly benefit.

John, these are great. Did the McDougal piece run in that front section of Time with the quotes? I used to love/covet that page. It was one of those go to places for great, topical illustration every week. I'd love to see some of the details from the whitewater piece as well. Isn't it amazing that the opposition party we have now can't seem to stir up the same kind of ruckus over Iraq as the GOP did over a little backwater business deal like whitewater?

I always dig those complex time-sinks (especially when Im not doing one) and the whitewater one is a beaut. It should be a mural in a Little Rock watering hole-maybe the Clinton Library on the river! In anycase, Id love a closer look. Maybe a gallery of closeups?

Terrific, John. A lot of labor here.

Hey thanks Drawgers! Zina - that was a fun one. Pre-digital so lettering was hand done - whereas today I probably would not go to the trouble to hand letter... I like that imperfect feel, though. I will try to re-scan if I can find it, and post some details. Dale - Yes - Time Spotlight page. Those assignments were the best! And when they started that, they really let the artists do their own thing. then.... The EDITORS wanted to get in on the fun - and started suggesting concepts. Some good, but many bad. I sould start a big piece w/bush crowd... not sure of setting... Almost picture an underground scene like Dr. Stangelove... Mick: Clinton Library! Ha! I'll send 'em a sample and see if it flies.

Whoa! I think your underground Strangelove bunker idea is fantastic! I'd love to see that!
J.S.Dykes January 19, 2007
Zina, It needs to be a totally unfamiliar setting - underground - super secret... No one has ever been there, or seen it ...except.... those in the 'circle'. There would also have to be a Mini-Me(!).

Now you're just teasing us! It's GOT to be done!
