Play ball!

Today mark’s the start of Major League Baseball’s 2010 season. And in today’s San Francisco Chronicle, some illustrations I finished up late last week. Art Director Matt Petty had seen my Fenway Park painting and thought something similar might work well for a bunch of baseball stories they were running. It was great to work with Matt on this fun assignment.

Some initial roughs...
Heres a detail of the main painting - with some of the line work added in Photoshop....
Ink drawings get scanned.... It is nice to work in ink on separate paper - no fear of ruining anything! Just keep drawing new versions till it works. Shapes on the bottom were done with a larger brush for a shadow shape under the diving Aaron Rowand......
An inside job.......
... and a detail....

I loved the way you did that Fenway Park painting, and it's good to see more, John.

Update- printed piece looks killer! Furthermore, any Giants/ A's fan worth their salt will be keeping this section around for at least a few days until they can thoroughly read it. Great job John!
